Toward an Epistemic-Logical Theory of Categorization

چکیده
Categorization systems are widely studied in psychology, sociology, and organization theory as information-structuringdevices which are critical to decision-making processes. In the present paper, we introduce a sound and complete epistemic logic of categories and agents’ categorical perception. The Kripke-style semantics of this logic is given in terms of data structures based on two domains: one domain representing objects (e.g. market products) and one domain representing the features of the objects which are relevant to the agents’ decision-making. We use this framework to discuss and propose logic-based formalizations of some core concepts from psychological, sociological, and organizational research in categorization theory.

متن کاملResponsible subjects and discourse causality. How mental spaces and perspective help identifying subjectivity in Dutch backward causal connectives
The Basic Communicative Spaces Network (BCSN – Sanders et al., 2009) accounts for crucial semantic–pragmatic characteristics of causal relations expressed by frequently used Dutch causal connectives. BCSN integrates subjectivity theory, domain theory, and mental spaces theory to explain their linguistic categorization. Starting with the original three-way classification of content, epistemic, a...
متن کاملEpistemic Programming Toward a New Programming Paradigm for Scientific Discovery
Any scientific discovery must include an epistemic process to gain knowledge of or to ascertain the existence of some empirical and/or logical entailments previously unknown or unrecognized. This paper proposes a new programming paradigm, named Epistemic Programming, which regards entailments as the subject of computing, takes three primary epistemic operations, i.e., epistemic deduction of kno...
متن کاملEpistemic Logic and Epistemology∗
This chapter provides a brief introduction to propositional epistemic logic and its applications to epistemology. No previous exposure to epistemic logic is assumed. Epistemic-logical topics discussed include the language and semantics of basic epistemic logic, multi-agent epistemic logic, combined epistemic-doxastic logic, and a glimpse of dynamic epistemic logic. Epistemological topics discus...
متن کاملLogics of Informational Attitudes and Informative Actions
There is an extensive literature focused on using logical methods to reason about communities of agents engaged in some form of social interaction. Much of the work builds upon existing logical frameworks developed by philosophers and computer scientists incorporating insights and ideas from philosophy (especially epistemology and philosophy of action), game theory, decision theory and social c...
